A family operated establishment, Khyber Pass translates the cuisine of the owners' native Afghanistan to trendy Hillcrest. What exactly is Afghani food? It's sort of a cross between Indian and Greek, and you'll find familiar elements of both on the menu. The appetizer sampler, a platter laden with tabulee (parlsey-bulgar-lemon salad), hummos, sambosa (similar to Indian samosas), borta (eggplant-yogurt dip) and nan bread. Main dish standouts includes Lamb Dal Chalow (slow-cooked lamb with lentils, ginger, garlic and cilantro), chicken curry, kabobs, tandoori shrimp, and Sabzi Paneer (spicy spinach with fresh cheese).

Had the bean and dill soup with the Kyber Pass kabob combo plate. Baklava and double espresso for dessert. Service good, food excellent, Italian wine, Indian beer on the alcoholic side. Located in the upscale University Ave. area of downtown(ish) San Diego. Ive never had Afgani food before, it was very satisfying. And no, they dont serve you the US dropped food packets. I really liked this place. I will be back.

The ambiance of the restaurant is one of relaxed elegance, with a tall stone fountain on the back wall, paintings and photographs of Afghans along the other sides, and complimentary lighting. Now for the food: I am a foodie. I love and appreciate well-prepared, good tasting dishes. Though everything we had was excellent, the sweet and sour rice cooked with lamb and cherries (yaghoot chalow) was amazing. It was one of the finest dishes I have ever eaten. The kachaloo (potatoes simmered in tomatoes, spices and peppers) was so good we surreptitiously dipped our bread in it (don't tell Angela).

I ate here with some co-workers and found the place really cute and the food was decent. The service was really good and I liked the blending of the spices used. I'd go back.

Great food. Authentic home-made and fresh Indo-Eastern fare in a fine dining atmosphere. Great service (always pleasant and sincere). This would be a perfect place to go with a small group of friends to have an extended feast where you order half of the menu and stay for a long while and just enjoy the entire experience (and tip really big!) The blending of spices the chef's of Khyber Pass create results in flavors nothing short of magical! I have been there numerous times and the food has never dissapointed. The service for the most part is very good. The atmosphere is good but not great which would be my only knock on the place. Overall, highly recommended. I will continue to make the trek from north county to Hill Crest for this restaurant!
